March 2012 - Changing times: International Women's Day 2012Newcastle CVS has launched a report on local women's organisations today, Thursday 8 March 2012. This is to coincide with International Women's Day. The report describes the experiences and views from ten women's organisations that are based in Newcastle. The report shows that women's organisations are facing a loss of funding; there is growing demand for their services; there is pressure on them to provide services for men as well; there is a growing need for women only space and women only services; and, the value of work with women is often not recognised by funders February 2012 - Cuts force newcastle charities to close doorsCharities and voluntary groups across Newcastle are facing closure and turning away desperate clients according to a report out today (23 February). Demand for help is soaring as organisations are considering shutting the doors says the latest survey into the impact of the economic downturn on Newcastle's voluntary and community sector. At a time when more than half of voluntary groups are reporting a rise in demand for services, 59% have seen a decrease in funding, following the slashing of public sector budgets. 37% have lost staff and 57% are using their reserves. 81% received grants from the public sector. With the region's councils facing massive budget cuts many groups are finding their funding drastically reduced or pulled altogether. The future looks bleak for many of Newcastle's charities with almost half expecting to close a service and a fifth reporting they may close in the next 12 months. December 2011 - New online database of Newcastle's charities and voluntary and community organisations launchedNewcastle CVS has launched a new online database of around 400 of Newcastle's charities and voluntary and community organisations. The database will help local people find the charities and voluntary and community organisations in Newcastle to support them. It will also help local people find charities and organisations to support by volunteering or giving donations. November 2011 - Newcastle Advocacy Centre gets its Quality Performance MarkNewcastle Advocacy Centre was awarded its Quality Performance Mark last week. This award is the only national advocacy specific quality assessment system which applies to all forms of one to one advocacy. Only 50 advocacy organisations nationally have successfully achieved the award. There are over 800 advocacy organisations nationally. The award means that Newcastle Advocacy Centre has demonstrated its commitment and ability in providing high quality independent advocacy. July 2011 - Is your voluntary and community group fit and healthy to face the future?Newcastle CVS has launched a new service to help local voluntary and community groups get back into good health if they are facing difficulties. The service, 'Is your organisation fit and healthy to face the future?', includes a checklist to see if groups are facing difficulties, plus a package of support to help organisations get back on track. The service is aimed mainly at small groups who cannot afford legal advice. January 2011 - What's happening in health?Local voluntary and community groups in Newcastle have been invited to attend a meeting to have their say on the new White Paper on Public Health. Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service has organised a 'Healthy Lives, Healthy People 'conference on Monday 7 February in Newcastle.
