Community organisers

Community organising is part of the coalition government's Big Society programme which aims by 2015 to have 5,000 trained organisers “catalysing neighbourhood action at a community level” and "igniting the impulse to act".  Locality (a merger of BASSAC and the Development Trust Association) was named the government's national delivery partner for the community organising programme early in 2011 and were awarded a £15m contract to deliver it.

In March 2011, Newcastle CVS held an event, community organising - starting the debate, an introduction to the background and practice of community organising and an opportunity for voluntary and community groups in the city to express their views on the possible impact of community organisers on voluntary and community group practice.
