Funding advice

NCVS employs two part-time Funding Advice Officers who between them provide full-time advice, information and support free of charge direct to voluntary organisations and community groups working in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Training courses are provided on a sliding scale of charges.

Advice and support

This can include:

  • helping your organisation identify its funding requirements

  • identifying possible sources of funding

  • explaining how to prepare applications

  • discussing your funding strategy

  • commenting on and helping with draft applications (but does not include writing them)

Information

  • The NCVS reference library normally contains over fifty funding-related publications open to anyone during office hours.  However following the fire on 20 March our collection has been reduced to a very small number.  For further information please email or phone 0191 232 7445 and ask to speak to a Funding Advice Officer.

  • Funding newsletter (click on link to access the latest issues), with up to date information about funding sources.  This is produced at least 10 times a year and sent to all NCVS members.

  • Information sheets (click on link to access these).

  • Access to FINE, Funderfinder GIN and DSC Trustfunding web resources during advice sessions to search for potential funders.

Please note that contact lists of funders are not available.  These encourage groups to make inappropriate applications which may take less time but also raise less money than a strategic approach.

Training

We run the following training sessions as part of NCVS's training programme:

  • ABC of fundraising

  • Developing fundraising skills

  • Developing solid structures for major bids

  • Advanced fundraising

There is a charge for training.  Customised training on any issue related to fundraising can also be arranged.

For more information about either of these, please see our Training section.  Customised training can also be arranged.

Before raising money

It is not necessary to be a registered charity to use the Funding Advice Section at NCVS but you do need to be a formally constituted group.  If you require help with this please contact the Information Section at NCVS by phone on 0191 232 7445 or email

However to get the best out of an advice session you do need to think about what it is you want to do, why you want to do it and have some firm idea about how much money you need to raise.
