We offer free advice and guidance to organisations in Newcastle and Gateshead. We also offer a range of premium services that are available to anyone and with a 10% discount to our members.

  • I've got an idea / I want to set up an organisation

    Is there something missing in your community? Do you have an idea about how to make a positive difference? We've been helping to establish and run successful charities and projects in Newcastle and Gateshead since 1929 so there's very little we don't know about running a charity and how to turn a good idea into a thriving project.

    Setting up a new charitiy or community organisation is an exciting opportunity but it also requires a lot of work and commitment. The first step is to arrange an initial conversation or meeting with one of our Support and Development team. They will be able to offer free advice and guidance on:

    • Researching the project need and outcomes
    • Researching other projects and partnership opportunities
    • Prioritising and planning a project that funders will support
    • Assessing the premises needs
    • Running a charity or community organisation

  • Choosing a legal structure

    Once we have established your project need and viability, we will help you choose the right legal structure. This is a crucial step.

    If you are setting up a community organisation, we will help you to become an unincorporated association. This service is free of charge and includes:

    • Providing you with information
    • Drafting your governing document and asking you to confirm any amendments

    If you need to set up a charity, charity and company limited by guarantee or social enterprise, you can take advantage of one of our Premium Services:

    • We will help you to set up a charitable incorporated organisation, a charitable company or a community interest company (CIC)
    • We will give you information about legal structures, draft your governing document, discuss and make any changes
    • We will complete your online charity application and / or Companies House documentation, and answer any questions from the Charity Commission or Companies House

    Newcastle CVS has a long history of successfully running and supporting organisations in Newcastle and Gateshead. In fact, this is something we have been doing since 1929! Our team has a broad range of expertise and can help you with various aspects of developing a project or running an organisation effectively. We may recommend suitable legal structures, offer advice on policies and governance, discuss the feasibility of a new project, or suggest potential funding streams you could explore.

    The first step is to make an initial enquiry with our Support and Deveopment team who will then arrange a meeting to ask a few questions about your organisation or project. From there, we will offer advice and suggestions based on your answers, and direct you to any external resources you may need. We offer this service free to any organisation operating in Newcastle or Gateshead.

    Legal Structures

    Converting to a charitable incorporated organisation, charitable company or community interest company (CIC):

    • We will give you information about legal structures and help you decide the right legal structure for what you plan to do
    • We will draft your governing document, discuss and make any changes before sending you a copy
    • We will complete the online charity application and / or Companies House documentation, and answer any questions from the Charity Commission or Companies House
    • We will support transferring assets and undertakings from the unincorporated association to the new charity and / or company
    • We will remove the unincorporated association or charitable trust from the register of charities

    Running effectively and efficiently

    Organisation  / project review:

    • We will conduct a thorough review of your organisation's strengths and weaknesses and make recommendations to help you run more effectively
    • This includes consultation, organisation reports and project evaluations

    Compliance and good practice

    Writing policies and procedures:

    • We will write or refresh your policies and procedures in line with legal requirements and best practice
    • We will work with your staff and governing body, and train everyone in the new policies and procedures
    • We will provide certification for completed policies and procedures

    Developing a project

    Project research and strategy:

    • We will meet with you and your team to assess the project needs and outcomes
    • We will present a report of recommendations
    • We will help you create a project / business strategy

    Funding the future

    Funding strategy and writing applications:

    • We will assess your needs and ideas, and help you develop a funding strategy
    • We will work closely wiht you to prepare the best possible funding application
    • We will edit your application and provide feedback for improvements

    Growing your skills and knowledge

    Tailored training and facilitation:

    • Our general training programme is open to all members but we also offer tailored training and facilitation
    • We will recommend suitable training or facilitation based on your initial conversations with one of our team
    • Training can include any aspect of running an organisation, from understanding roles and responsibilities for new committee members / trustees and how to run effective meetings to developing a project plan and reporting outcomes and impact

    Leads the Support and Development Team to give advice, guidance and support on areas such as governance, income generation and organisational development to charities, social enterprises and community organisations. I have 20 plus years’ experience working in the charity sector across the North East and committed to making a positive difference to people, communities and organisations.

    Barbara supports organisations in Gateshead. Barbara has been working and volunteering in the Voluntary and Community Sector for 30 years, working across County Durham with community groups on governance issues and training trustees. Barbara is a qualified paralegal and also has a degree in the Voluntary and Community Sector.

Debra is passionate about supporting people to work collectively for positive change, and enjoys working with people.

    Emma supports organisations across Gateshead. In a previous role, Emma was part of the team delivering the Great Exhibition of the North. Emma is experienced in working with voluntary organisations and is passionate about the development of her home town, Gateshead. She brings a wealth of skills and qualifications in Project Management and Volunteer Management, and a degree in Politics.
